From the desk of Dr Fillis...
Welcome to Parkhurst Primary School. If you are visiting our website for the first time, we sincerely hope that you take the opportunity to visit us in person. We look forward to sharing our unique and wonderful school, staff and learners with you.
We believe that the early years of a child’s education are the most significant and important. Today, the role of a school is not only to pursue academic excellence, but also to motivate and empower learners to be life-long learners, critical thinkers, and productive members of an ever-changing global society. At Parkhurst we strive to provide our learners with an atmosphere of multi-faceted development where learners are encouraged to channel their potential in the pursuit of excellence. This can only be possible in a holistic, learner-centred environment. The talents, skills and abilities of each learner are identified, nurtured and encouraged so that he/she is able to reach greater heights. We see our school as a “place of excellence” as indicated in the school anthem.
At Parkhurst our approach to learning is child-centred, encouraging activity-based learning and inculcating a scientific temper and a spirit of free enquiry. In our curriculum, the learner is the primary focus, and each child is involved in the learning process. We motivate our teachers to provide an atmosphere of discovery, where learners are encouraged to be creative and curious, instead of loading the children with academic burden. We are thus constantly improving our teaching methodology so that it turns learning into a combination of classroom study, research and scientific discovery.
While academic excellence is our major thrust, the school is also devoted to prepare our learners for life, groom them to face the challenges of tomorrow, and encourage them to be socially relevant. At present, like all schools, we are faced with the challenge of developing a good sense of discipline and moral values within the ever-changing norms of society. Children, these days, are much more sensitive; they possess very high self-esteem and believe in independent thinking. At Parkhurst, therefore, we believe in and apply Positive Discipline. Our educational philosophy is centred on praise, encouragement, enthusiasm, and affection, rather than criticism, fear, and punishment. We constantly work to develop self-discipline and good moral character, where all learners are expected to conform to high disciplinary standards and to develop values of tolerance, fair play, compassion, integrity and fortitude.
I am confident that Parhurst Primary school will always be a beacon of light, guiding the destiny of its learners and radiating kindness and compassion as it soars in its pursuit of academic excellence and in the fulfilment of the school’s motto:
“Nulli Secundus” – Second to None.
We also thank the parents of our learners for always having bestowed their faith and confidence in us.
Most importantly, at the school, we are a team of dedicated teachers and staff, committed to the welfare of the children in our care. For us, teaching is a passion and a calling. The importance of instilling good values in our learners is our prime objective as Ralph Waldo Emerson so aptly said: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small compared to what lies within us”.
Parkhurst Primary School’s administration, staff and parents always work together in order to create a positive school environment and culture so that our children can have the highest quality of education that will enable each learner to reach his or her full potential.
Again, welcome to Parkhurst!
